Let me start with a prediction: I predict that you have an account on at least one of the following Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. Am I right?
Social media has become part of our lives. For many taking away their ability to log onto their social media page is the same as taking away their ability to breathe. “Stop and smell the roses” has been replaced with “stop and check in on social media.” I’m sure you agree, yet many businesses still think of social media as an afterthought. Every digital marketing company will tell you that your business can thrive with the right social media marketing strategies.
When you ask a business, “where do your customers go to find out more about you?” Their answer is, “Our website.” The truth is they go to social media. Your website is made up with your words, social media is made up of words of your customers and they are more likely to believe them over you. This means your role as a business owner should be to maintain your brand’s online presence.
Many businesses think that social media is for fun, in reality, it is a very powerful force, one that can make or break your business. Use it right and it can bring power to your business. On the other hand, flops on social media can be so bad for business you might as well cover your business name with a “Going Out of Business” sign.
To help you and make sure you avoid those social media flops, here are 3 social media marketing mistakes companies make.
#1 Mistake to Avoid: Too Many Social Channels
Being on social media does not mean you have to be on every channel/platform. Focus on the channels where the majority of your customers are. How do you know where your customers are? Simple, ask them. Also, understand that each channel has its own personality and you need to fit in with each one differently.
Another concern that comes up with having a presence on too many social channels is that each one needs to be maintained. This maintenance may involve 3 – 7 customized posts daily. The frequency and consistency of the post is a must so that you stay relevant and engaged with your customers. Most companies realize this mistake when they find that they are not able to keep up with the multiple postings that they have to do. My recommendation is to start 1 or 2 channels and once you have mastered these then you can slowly expand and add more.
#2 Mistake to Avoid: Ignoring Feedback
This is a big one. This applies not only to good feedback but also to bad feedback. As much time as your customers spend online and on social media, they love hearing from you because it gives your company a friendly, human face. Understandably it can be tricky to keep track of all of your followers’ interactions, but the quicker and more you respond to their feedback/comments, the more opportunity you have of giving them a good experience with you, your company, and your brand.
Remember in the old days when the rule was that if a customer has a bad experience, they will tell 10 of their friends? Now they don’t say anything they just post it on their social media page and trust me, they have more than 10 friends in their following. If you are able to quickly address any concerns and thank them for their feedback, you put yourself in a position where they can only praise you and your company to others.
#3 Mistake to Avoid: Content Automation
For many small businesses, creating content and managing social channels regularly are tough tasks. This can take a lot of time and effort, which is why so many businesses fail to update frequently. Luckily, there are lots of tools that can help you and make it easy for you to look after your social media management.
I would venture to say that there is a tool for just about every need. Regardless if your need is in graphic, publishing, curating, or analytics, there are tools to help you. Some of these tools include Hootsuite, Buffer, Sprout Social, Canva and TweetDeck. These are just some of the examples of tools you can use to save time and make its management easier.
Bonus Mistake to Avoid: Using Facebook’s “Boost”
This may sound like an easy way to get your ad or post more views or engagement and if you are lazy, it is. The problem is that if you are looking to get more customers the only thing the “boost” will do for you is, get you more views and/or likes, none of which translate to more revenue. If you use the Facebook AdManager the right way, you will not only be able to get more likes and views but most importantly MORE REVENUE.
Social media is more than signing up for accounts and posting. Each platform is different and you need to have a different strategy for each one. The major platforms are Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube. Which one should you master first? The one that majority of your target audience is on.
